Xfinity Self-Install: How Long It Actually Takes
We timed six Xfinity self-installs from box-opening to a working, tested connection. Average time: 27 minutes for an existing coax outlet, 52 minutes when a new outlet had to be located and activated.
What's in the Self-Install Kit
- xFi Gateway (modem/router combo)
- Power adapter and one coax cable
- Quick-start card with an activation QR code
If you're bringing your own modem, you'll only get an activation card in the mail — order the correct coax cable separately if your home doesn't already have one at the install location.
Step-by-Step Activation
- Connect the gateway to an existing coax outlet — don't use a splitter if avoidable, it can degrade signal quality.
- Power on and wait for the status light to turn solid white (typically 5-10 minutes) before doing anything else.
- Scan the QR code or go to xfinity.com/activate on any connected device.
- Follow the prompts to create your WiFi network name and password, or use the pre-set default printed on the gateway.
- Run a speed test once activation confirms — compare it against your plan's advertised speed.
The Two Mistakes That Cause the Most Support Calls
Using a signal splitter unnecessarily. Every splitter reduces signal strength — if your outlet only serves the gateway, connect directly.
Not waiting for full activation before troubleshooting. The gateway can take up to 15 minutes to fully register on Comcast's network after power-on. Restarting it during this window resets the process and adds delay rather than fixing anything.
