The Power of We: How Ward Cunningham Built the First Wiki in 1995

In 1995, the web was mostly a place where you downloaded files. Only administrators with FTP credentials could write or upload content. Ward Cunningham changed this completely by asking: what if anyone who visits a page could edit it instantly with a single button?

    WikiWikiWeb: The Quick Web

Inspired by the Hawaiian word "wikiwiki" (which means *very quick*), Cunningham designed the **WikiWikiWeb** in 1995. The rules were simple:

    • Every page had a highly visible **"Edit Page"** link.
    • Typing words together in **CamelCase** (like *NewPageName*) automatically created a brand new linked page.
    • No registration was required; the community was trusted to self-police the entries.

Cunningham's code was lightweight and elegant. His collaborative directory engine proved that collective human intelligence could catalog information faster and more accurately than closed corporate teams, directly paving the way for Wikipedia.

    Cunningham's Law

Ward Cunningham is also famous for introducing **Cunningham's Law**, an empirical internet truth: "The best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer." Because humans love correcting others, this social trigger drives the rapid editing and verification cycle of wikis globally.

Who invented the first wiki and why?
The first wiki (WikiWikiWeb) was invented in 1995 by Ward Cunningham to build a collaborative, easily editable database for software engineers. He named it "wiki" after the Hawaiian word for quick, introducing the concept of multi-user in-browser editing.
