The True Cost of 'Free' VPNs: Network & Privacy Audit
Maintaining global 10 Gbps server nodes and low-latency transit peering costs millions of dollars per year. If a VPN provider claims to be completely 'free' forever, they are monetizing you in dangerous ways:
- 1. User Browsing Harvesting: The CSIRO independent cybersecurity study revealed that over 75% of free VPN services embed third-party tracking libraries that monitor your shopping, search history, and DNS requests to sell to ad exchanges.
- 2. Aggressive Bandwidth Throttling: Free VPNs intentionally cap your download speeds to 1.5 Mbps - 5 Mbps and enforce strict 2 GB to 5 GB monthly caps, causing video buffering and packet loss.
- 3. Outdated Encryption & DNS Leaks: Many free tools still rely on deprecated PPTP protocols or unpatched OpenVPN instances, exposing your true home IP address to websites and gaming servers.
- 4. Malware and Ad Injection: Over 38% of tested free mobile VPN apps contain adware or malicious code that injects popups into your browser.
Real Speed & Latency Benchmark: Standard Free VPN vs. NordVPN Trial
