The Digital Librarian: Brewster Kahle's Battle to Preserve the Web Forever

The average lifespan of a web page is just 100 days before it is edited, deleted, or lost forever. In 1996, computer engineer Brewster Kahle realized that humanity was suffering a massive digital amnesia. He set out to build the digital Library of Alexandria: the Internet Archive.

    The Wayback Machine

Kahle, who co-founded the web traffic service Alexa Internet (later sold to Amazon), engineered global web crawlers to take automated snapshots of the entire World Wide Web. In 2001, he launched **The Wayback Machine**, allowing anyone to travel back in time and view how any website looked in 1996, 2005, or yesterday.

Today, the Internet Archive stores petabytes of digital history—millions of free books, movies, audio tracks, and software files, preserving our collective digital culture against data degradation and corporate censorship.

Who founded the Internet Archive and how does it store websites?
The Internet Archive was founded in 1996 by computer engineer Brewster Kahle. It preserves digital history by utilizing automated web crawlers that capture, catalog, and store static snapshots of global websites in massive open databases accessed through the "Wayback Machine."
